Washingtonian is seeking a motivated, collaborative, and detail-oriented Assistant Photo Editor to join its creative department. For 60 years, the award-winning city magazine for the Washington area has been a home for groundbreaking feature writing, essential service journalism, and arresting visual storytelling. Our creative department plays a central role in that legacy, and this is an opportunity to shape the look of the brand while growing your own editorial voice. Youll report directly to the Director of Creative and work closely with editors, designers, and photographers.

Responsibilities include:

  • Extensive and creative photo research for front and back of book and feature stories as needed
  • Commissioning and producing photography for the magazine including portrait, still life, and reportage
  • Clearing rights and permissions for all images and talent, as necessary
  • Gathering credit and caption information
  • Working with design/production teams during the proofing process to submit images for color and retouching
  • Sourcing and pitching new photographers, artists and photo essay ideas
  • Processing invoices and keeping track of budgets
  • Opportunities for shooting editorial stories for print and/or web
  • Perform additional tasks and projects as assigned by the Director of Creative


Qualifications:

  • BA/BS and 13 years of experience in photo editing, photo research, photojournalism, or agency work (a strong internship or freelance portfolio can count)
  • Expert in Photoshop; comfortable in InDesign and InCopy
  • Deep understanding of usage rights, licensing, model releases, and negotiating fees
  • Highly organized, proactive, and able to juggle multiple deadlines without dropping the ball
  • Excellent communicator who thrives in a small, collaborative, fast-paced team
  • Bonus points: you shoot your own work, have D.C.-area contacts, or bring a unique visual perspective

  • Salary Range: $43,000-$46,000
  • Three weeks of vacation, increasing with tenure
