Job Description
The Assistant Bookstore Manager will support the Bookstore Manager in the day-to-day operations of the Iowa Central Bookstore by assisting with purchasing, retail sales and supervision of Bookstore staff. The Assistant Manager will be the employee primarily responsible for apparel and souvenir merchandising as well as the maintenance and operation of the Iowa Central Online Bookstore website. The Assistant Manager must possess good computer, math and analytical skills to better run a modern, financially sound operation. The Assistant Manager will promote friendly, quality service to students, staff and the public while maintaining a pleasant retail environment.
Constant (67-100%)
- Provide quality service to students, staff and the public.
- Serve as lead cashier as well as implement and oversee that adequate controls are maintained over inventory and cashier operations.
- Be responsible for ordering, pricing and inventory of apparel and other miscellaneous items for resale.
- Update and maintain the product lines, prices and inventory of items displayed at the Iowa Central Bookstore and the Iowa Central Online Bookstore website.
- Ship Online Bookstore orders in an efficient and timely (daily) manner throughout the year.
- Respond to customer emails and phone calls in a timely (daily) manner.
Frequent (34-66%)
- Be responsible for unloading shipments of merchandise.
- Be responsible for processing textbook orders and returns from high schools for PSEOA.
- Maintain accurate records of books borrowed to high schools and follow up when necessary.
- Develop and implement marketing plans to boost apparel and merchandise sales in off peak months (mid semester).
- Maintain bookstore social media.
Occasional (10-33%)
- Work additional time beyond regular hours when the need arises (i.e.: beginning of each term, move in days, Saturday events, etc.).
- Assist in the reviewing, coding, and approval of vendor invoices on a timely basis and submit them to the Business Office for payment.
- Assist with and supervision of staff.
- Assist in the hiring and training of Bookstore staff.
- Meet with the Bookstore Manager as necessary to discuss needs or issues related to the bookstore operation.
- Assist with the fiscal year-end inventory process.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Be able and willing to represent Iowa Central Community College in a positive manner with prospective, former, and current students, clients, suppliers, and the community we serve.
- Assist the manager in the daily operations of the physical College Bookstore as well as being the person primarily responsible for the college's Online Bookstore.
- Provide quality service to students, faculty, staff, and the general public.
- Maintain pleasant working conditions.
- Must be willing to work beyond regular working hours when required.
- Assume responsibility and exercise independent judgment when making decisions.
- Learn accurate knowledge of books that are used for the classroom.
- Possess a high level of organizational skills.
- Possess strong analytical, computer and financial skills.
Associate degree required, bachelor's degree preferred. Retail experience preferred. Strong math, computer and office machine skills. Must possess excellent organizational, communication, and human relations skills.
GENERAL PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES WITH OR WITHOUT A REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION:
Position involves constant (67-100%) viewing computer screen, lifting heavy boxes, talking to or listening to persons over the telephone, standing, kneeling, grasping, reaching, walking, stooping, and typing; frequent (34-66%) lifting (books - up to 70- pounds), close visual work, climbing on ladder, loading and unloading book carts, boxing and unboxing book and supply cartons, some general upkeep of the facilities, such as cleaning, vacuuming, decorating, snow removal, and emptying trash; occasional (10-33%) some travel time, tornado drills, and some general knowledge of hazardous chemicals.
