Job Description The New York Times Book Review is seeking a senior staff editor to partner with desk leadership in driving the expansion of its digital service journalism operation. You should have a passion for books and a vision for how the Book Review can help readers understand the world through books and find their next great read. This role requires attention to detail, success at collaborating with multiple stakeholders and the ability to independently lead deadline-driven projects. The right candidate is highly organized and strategic and skilled at experimenting with non-traditional digital story forms. Responsibilities: In partnership with desk leadership, develop a strategic roadmap to achieve our goals for first-in-class service journalism Work closely with staff and freelance reporters to develop multiple stories per month, both timely and evergreen — and regularly update older stories as needed Work with a team of editors to write engaging headlines, captions and social media posts Collaborate with photo editors and art directors on assignments and larger projects Foster a collaborative culture that also meets The Times’s editorial standards. Pitch and assign stories that include and feature a wide range of voices Respond to news events by writing or assigning timely service-oriented pieces May be responsible for supervising other journalists. Basic Qualifications: 10 years as a digital editor , focused on books or other cultural spaces Strong communication and organizational skills Proven track record of producing excellent service journalism Ability to write quickly and with authority. Preferred Qualifications: Experience in a newsroom Knowledge and interest in books across genre and type (fiction/nonfiction) This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY. The annual base pay salary for this role is between $120,126.82 and $125,000.00.
